Yggdrasil CEO: “We’ve changed what this business can be”

Yggdrasil CEO: “We’ve changed what this business can be”

Yggdrasil Gaming, the slot developer with roots in Stockholm, now describes itself as something more than a traditional game studio. That’s according to CEO James Curwen in a recent interview. He says two technology platforms, Game in a Box and Studio in a Box, have changed both how games are made and who gets to make them.

The backdrop is an industry problem Curwen himself identifies: too many new slots are simply reskinned versions of existing games, because traditional development takes months and costs a lot of money.

What’s new

When games take months and significant money to develop, studios naturally become risk-averse, and building on something that already works becomes the safer option. Game in a Box is designed to make the development process faster, more efficient and more flexible, while Studio in a Box goes a step further, giving businesses the tools to build their own portfolio of original games without having to set up a traditional studio.

Curwen describes the difference as being about speed: previously, any significant change could trigger a whole new development cycle involving several different teams, whereas with Game in a Box a creator can iterate much closer to real time. Studio in a Box launched on 12 January 2026 as a new, end-to-end studio model built on top of the Game in a Box technology.

Live casino supplier Eeze became the first company to use Studio in a Box as it expands into slots, gaining access to Yggdrasil’s distribution network as part of the deal. The first games are expected before the end of 2026, with an eventual pace of two titles a month once the pipeline is running. According to Eeze, the partnership allows it to scale its slots strategy quickly and extend its reach in the market.

What it means for you as a player

For anyone playing at a Swedish-licensed casino, this mostly means more and more varied slots arriving faster. Instead of endless reskins of old favourites, more independent studios can enter the market with original ideas built on the same technical foundation. It also opens the door for suppliers from other parts of the industry, such as live casino, to try their hand at slots without building an entirely new studio from scratch.

This doesn’t change how you gamble, only how quickly new titles can reach Swedish casinos. As always, it’s worth keeping an eye on your own play — help is available via Stödlinjen.se, and anyone wanting a break from all licensed gambling can self-exclude via Spelpaus.se.

The bigger picture

The push is part of a wider strategy in which Yggdrasil is positioning itself as more of a technology and distribution partner than purely a game developer. Through its YGG Masters programme, the company has already signed up several independent studios that build games using the same technology, and the network is also used to spread content into new regulated markets beyond Sweden. For Swedish players, the main takeaway is that Yggdrasil’s growing ecosystem of partner studios keeps adding to the lineup at the casinos with a Swedish licence where the company’s games already appear.
