Online casino games
Casino games is the umbrella term for the games at an online casino, and the big four are slots, live casino, roulette and blackjack. Here you get a quick overview: what separates the games, how to compare them using RTP and volatility, and which Swedish operators have a wide range. Everything we cover applies to casinos licensed by Spelinspektionen (the Swedish Gambling Authority).
Each game type also has its own, more detailed guide on our site. Feel free to start here, so you know which one you want to explore further before you deposit money anywhere.
What are online casino games?
An online casino game is a game for money where chance decides the outcome. Chance is handled either by a random number generator (RNG) in the game’s software, or by a physical wheel or deck of cards in a studio that is filmed. The games are usually developed by independent game providers and then offered by the casinos.
Casino games are usually divided into three groups:
- Slots – video slots with reels, symbols and bonus features.
- Table games – roulette, blackjack and other classics where you play against a random number generator.
- Live casino – the same table games plus game shows, but with real croupiers streamed live from a studio.
What they all have in common is that the house has a built-in advantage. How large it is varies with the game and the rules, and it determines how much of the stakes, on average, goes back to the players. That is why it helps to understand a few basic concepts before you choose what to play.
To play casino games online in Sweden you must be 18 or over and identify yourself with the operator, which in practice is usually done with BankID. Winnings from operators with a Swedish licence are also tax-free for you as a player.
Popular casino games – our guides
Each game type below has its own page with rules, payouts and casinos.
Slots
Slots are machine games where you spin reels with symbols and win on combinations along paylines or in clusters. Modern slots often have free spins, multipliers and tumbling symbols. The range is wide, from calm games with many small wins to games where almost the entire return lies in rare bonus rounds.
In our guide to online slots we show how to read a game’s RTP and volatility and which titles are worth knowing about.
Live casino
Live casino means table games and game shows with real croupiers who are filmed in a studio and streamed to your phone or computer. You place your stakes in a digital interface but see the ball, the cards or the wheel in real time. The pace is calmer than in an RNG game, and the chat makes it feel more like sitting at a real table.
Which studios and games are available at Swedish casinos is covered on the page about live casino and live dealers.
Roulette
Roulette is the classic wheel game where you bet on a number, a colour or a group of numbers. The European version has 37 pockets, the numbers 1–36 and a zero, and the house edge is 1/37, roughly 2.7%. The American version also has a double zero, which raises the house edge to 5.26%.
Payouts, variants and probabilities are gathered in our guide to online roulette.
Blackjack
Blackjack, or 21 as many people call it, is about getting closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. It is one of the few casino games where your own decisions affect the result. With basic strategy and generous rules, the house edge according to Wizard of Odds is only around 0.28%. The rules matter a lot: if the table pays 6:5 instead of 3:2 for blackjack, it costs the player roughly 1.39%.
Rule variants, payouts and strategy are explained in the guide online blackjack.
Four well-known slots to compare against
Some titles are so well known that they work as a benchmark when you compare other games. These four are available at several of the Swedish casinos we cover.
Book of Dead (Play’n GO)
An Egyptian adventure slot from 2016 with high volatility. Three or more book symbols give ten free spins, and before the round starts a symbol is chosen that can expand across the whole reel. RTP is stated as 96.21% in the standard version and the maximum win as 5,000 times the stake.
Gates of Olympus (Pragmatic Play)
Released in February 2021 and built on tumbling symbols instead of classic paylines. Multipliers of up to 500x can appear both in the base game and during free spins. According to Pragmatic Play, the RTP is 96.5%.
Sweet Bonanza (Pragmatic Play)
The 2019 sweets slot also has tumbling symbols, and during free spins bombs with multipliers of 2x–100x can land. Four or more scatter symbols give ten free spins. RTP is stated as 96.48%.
Starburst (NetEnt)
A classic from 2012 with low volatility. The game has no free spins but has expanding wilds that trigger re-spins, and the lines pay both ways. RTP is stated as 96.09% and the maximum win as 500 times the stake.
Bear in mind that operators can sometimes choose a version of the game with a lower RTP than standard. So always check the figure in the game’s information panel before you start playing.
How to choose casino games that suit you
There is no casino game that is best for everyone, but there are games that suit you better or worse. Three things are worth looking at more closely.
RTP and the house edge
RTP (return to player) shows how much of the stakes a game theoretically pays back over a very large number of rounds. An RTP of 96% corresponds to a house edge of 4%. If you stake a total of 1,000 kr, the expected cost is therefore 40 kr, but over a single evening the outcome can be completely different in either direction.
In table games people more often talk directly about the house edge. It is around 2.7% in European roulette and considerably lower in blackjack if you follow basic strategy.
Volatility
Volatility describes how winnings are distributed. A low-volatility game, such as Starburst, often gives small wins. A high-volatility game, such as Book of Dead, can go a long time without bigger wins and then pay a lot at once. RTP tells you how much is paid back on average, volatility how unevenly it happens.
If you have a smaller budget and want your money to last longer, a game with lower volatility is often a better fit. High volatility means bigger swings, so it is especially important to decide in advance how much you are prepared to lose.
Features and rules
In slots, the bonus features create the variety: free spins, multipliers, wilds and tumbling symbols. In table games it is about rule variants instead. A roulette table with La Partage lowers the house edge on even-money bets to 1.35%, and in blackjack it makes a clear difference whether the dealer stands or hits on soft 17 – the dealer hitting costs the player roughly 0.22%.
Play for free in demo mode
Many slots can be played for free in demo mode, with play money. It is a good way to get to know a game before you play with real money. Both Play’n GO and NetEnt, for example, have demo versions of Book of Dead and Starburst on their official game pages.
Casinos with a wide range of casino games
The range differs considerably between operators. The table shows what the casinos themselves state about their game range and which providers they highlight. The information was checked in October 2026.
| Casino | Game range according to the casino | Example providers | Live casino according to the casino |
|---|---|---|---|
| LeoVegas | More than 3,000 games | Pragmatic Play, NetEnt, Play’n GO, Hacksaw Gaming | Evolution |
| Unibet | More than 3,000 casino games | NetEnt, Quickspin, ELK Studios, Play’n GO | Evolution |
| Casumo | See the casino’s website | Play’n GO, Pragmatic Play, NetEnt, Nolimit City | Evolution |

LeoVegas and Unibet both state that they have more than 3,000 games. LeoVegas also has its own games from LeoVegas Studios and an exclusive blackjack table from OnAir Entertainment alongside Evolution’s live casino. Unibet has a casino app for both iOS and Android.
Casumo lists an unusually long line-up of providers, from Evolution and Play’n GO to smaller studios such as Thunderkick and Push Gaming. The casino also has its own app with slots, live casino and payments.
The game providers behind casino games
Several of the big providers have roots in Sweden.
- Evolution – founded in 2006 with its head office in Stockholm. Focused on live casino and today also owns NetEnt, Red Tiger, Ezugi, Big Time Gaming and Nolimit City.
- NetEnt – founded in Sweden in 1996 and long listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. Evolution completed its acquisition of the company on 1 December 2020.
- Play’n GO – has its head office in Växjö and states that its portfolio includes more than 400 titles, among them Book of Dead.
- Pragmatic Play – has its head office in Gibraltar and makes both slots and live casino. The company states that it is licensed or certified in more than 30 jurisdictions.
Playing casino games online with a Swedish licence
An operator that wants to offer casino games to Swedish players must have a licence from Spelinspektionen. The licence gives you a range of protections. For example, you must set a limit on your deposits per day, week and month. If you lower the limit it applies immediately, while an increase takes effect no earlier than 72 hours later.
Bonuses may only be offered the first time you play with a licence holder, so there are no recurring deposit bonuses at Swedish casinos. Since 1 May 2026 an extended ban on gambling with credit has also applied, which among other things means that credit cards may not be used for deposits.
If you play at a casino without a Swedish licence, you lose these protections. In addition, winnings above 100 kr may become taxable, at 30% tax on the net winnings.
Responsible gambling
See casino games as entertainment that costs money, never as a way to make money. Set a budget before you start and stick to it, even if you have a losing streak behind you.
All casinos with a Swedish licence must offer a 24-hour break that takes effect immediately. If you want to exclude yourself from all licensed operators at once, you can use Spelpaus.se, the national self-exclusion register, for anything from 10 days to until further notice. If you need someone to talk to, you can reach Stödlinjen, the national gambling helpline, on 020-81 91 00 or via stodlinjen.se.
