What is a casino welcome bonus?

A casino welcome bonus is an offer to new players linked to their first deposit. The most common form is a deposit bonus: the operator matches what you deposit by a set percentage up to a cap. Free spins on a selected slot are often included too.

Percentage match bonuses

With a 100% bonus you receive as much in bonus funds as you deposit, up to the maximum amount. Deposit 300 kr and you get 300 kr extra. With 300%, the bonus is three times the deposit, so 250 kr gives you 750 kr in bonus funds. The cap decides where it stops: above the maximum, only your own deposit grows.

Packages and separate products

Many operators have different welcome offers for casino, live casino and sports betting. According to its terms page in October 2026, for example, LeoVegas has a separate live casino bonus with a 35x wagering requirement within 60 days, and Unibet lets you choose between a casino, sports betting or poker bonus. You only get one of them, so pick the one that suits what you actually plan to play.

Match bonus or free spins – which suits you?

A match bonus gives you more to play with, but it almost always comes with wagering requirements that dictate how long and how much you must play. Free spins are a smaller commitment: the value is fixed and the terms are often simpler. If you play rarely and for small stakes, a smaller package with simple terms may suit you better than a large bonus you will never manage to play through.

Several operators offer both in the same package. That is convenient, but it also makes it important to keep the terms apart: winnings from the spins may follow different rules from the match bonus.

How to claim a welcome bonus

The process is broadly the same at every Swedish operator. You sign up, verify your identity with an electronic ID and set a deposit limit. You then choose the offer – sometimes with a promo code – and make your first deposit. The bonus is usually credited straight away or once the deposit condition has been met. Read the terms before you deposit, because that is the point at which you commit.

Why you only get one welcome bonus per operator

The background is Spellagen (the Gambling Act), Chapter 14, Section 9: a licence holder may only offer or give a bonus on the first occasion you play any of its games. Deposit bonuses on later occasions, loyalty bonuses and the like are therefore not permitted. That is why Swedish welcome offers look the way they do.

The rule has also been tested in court. According to the Administrative Court in Linköping (case 5341-19, 2020), a bonus spread across several deposits counts as several bonuses. A package along the lines of “a bonus on your first three deposits” therefore cannot be offered. Spelinspektionen (the Swedish Gambling Authority) also enforces the rule in practice – in April 2026 Polar Limited received a remark after giving bonuses to the same customers more than once. What if the operator runs several sites?

Because the law refers to “any of the licence holder’s games”, the reasonable reading is that several sites under the same licence share a single welcome bonus. We have not found any explicit guidance or ruling on that exact point, so treat it as an interpretation. Many operators also write the restriction into their own terms: LeoVegas states that the promotion is “offered once”, Mr Green that only one offer can be used, Unibet that the bonus is limited to one per player, household and payment method, and Casumo one per household or IP address.

The reverse also holds. Snabbare and ComeOn are run by different licence companies, and the same goes for Unibet and Maria Casino. Having already received a bonus at one does not, according to the wording of the law, prevent a bonus at the other – but always check the licence holder in the footer.

The details for Unibet and ComeOn were taken from the casinos’ websites in October 2026. Unibet alternatively offers 50 free spins for a 100 kr deposit, and ComeOn markets its offer as a 250 kr deposit giving you 1,000 kr to play with. According to the promotion page, Mr Green’s main bonus is activated with the code MRDUBBEL and applies to both casino and live casino. We have not been able to confirm the offers for Betsson and Snabbare – read the terms at the casino before you deposit any money.

Read the table row by row rather than column by column. The highest maximum amount tells you nothing about how much you need to wager, and the lowest multiplier can hide the fact that the requirement applies to both deposit and bonus. Compare first and foremost the combination of requirement, validity period and maximum stake with the amount you yourself plan to deposit.

How to read the terms of a deposit bonus

Bonus terms are often long, but a handful of points decide almost everything. Go through them in this order.

1. What the requirement is calculated on. Deposit, bonus or both together. The same number can mean more than twice the wagering depending on the answer.
2. The multiplier. 10x, 20x, 25x or 30x – the lower it is, the less you need to wager before the money becomes withdrawable.
3. The time limit. At the casinos in the table it is usually 60 days. Work out whether you can realistically play through the requirement in time.
4. The maximum stake. The cap per round while the requirement applies, for example 50 kr at Casumo and 25 kr at Unibet.
5. Game contribution. How much different games count. Slots often count in full, while table games and live games often count for little or nothing.

Live casino and table games

If you mainly plan to play live casino or table games, game contribution matters even more. LeoVegas, for example, states that table games and video poker count 10% and live games not at all towards the casino bonus, and that certain slots are excluded. That is why some operators have separate live bonuses with their own requirements. In that case, compare that bonus rather than the casino bonus, and check which tables count.

Worked example: same deposit, four different requirements

To show how much the set-ups differ, we use a made-up example: you deposit 500 kr and receive a 100% bonus, so 500 kr extra. That amount fits under the cap for all four models.

Model D has the second-lowest multiplier yet still requires four times as much play as model A. Then add the maximum stake: with a cap of 25 kr per round, 15,000 kr of wagering takes at least 600 rounds. And if you play a game that only counts 10%, you need to stake ten times as much – a 5,000 kr requirement then becomes 50,000 kr in stakes.

When the deposit is larger than the cap

A common mistake is to calculate on the whole deposit. Suppose the cap is 500 kr and you deposit 1,000 kr with a 100% match. The bonus is then 500 kr, not 1,000 kr. If the requirement is 20x on deposit plus bonus, the wagering comes to (1,000 + 500) × 20 = 30,000 kr. Had you deposited 500 kr, the same bonus would have required 20,000 kr. The extra deposit therefore gave you no extra bonus but 10,000 kr more to play through.

If you would rather avoid these calculations altogether, it may be worth looking at bonuses with no wagering requirements, where winnings are paid out directly.

Common mistakes with welcome bonuses

• Depositing more than planned to reach the maximum bonus. The cap is a ceiling, not a target.
• Playing first and taking the bonus later. The bonus applies the first time you play – if you have already played, the chance may be gone.
• Choosing the sports betting bonus by mistake. At operators with both casino and betting, it counts as the same single bonus.
• Forgetting what the requirement is calculated on. 20x on deposit plus bonus is more than 20x on the bonus alone.
• Withdrawing before the requirement is met without reading the terms. Check what happens to the bonus if you withdraw early.
• Missing that some games do not count. If you play an excluded game, your wagering does not move forward at all, however much you stake.

Responsible gambling and welcome bonuses

A bonus does not change the house edge in the games, and wagering requirements mean you play for more than you deposited. So set your budget before you choose an offer. When you sign up with a Swedish operator you verify your identity, usually with BankID, and set a deposit limit per day, week and month. A lower limit applies immediately; an increase only after at least 72 hours.

Bear in mind too that gambling must not be funded with credit. Since 1 May 2026 operators must block credit cards as a payment method, so card deposits are made with debit cards that take money directly from your own account.

If you notice that the bonus makes you play more than you intended, that is a signal to take seriously.
