Online slots 2026

By Mikael Sandberg · Fact-checked by Emma Bergqvist against Spelinspektionen's licence register · Updated 19 October 2026

Online slots 2026

Slots are online slot machines: digital reels with symbols where every spin is decided by a random number generator and the win depends on which symbols land. Here you get an overview of four well-known games, an explanation of how to compare RTP, volatility and features, and a list of casinos with a Swedish licence that have a wide range.

All figures on the page come either directly from the game providers or from established reference sites, and we say which when it matters. Where the information differs, we do not print a value, but instead show where you can find the correct figure for the game you actually open.

One thing is worth keeping in mind from the start: slot machines are entertainment with a built-in advantage for the casino. No staking strategy or time of day changes that. That is why we put as much weight on how the games work as on where they are available.

What are slots? How online slot machines work

A slot consists of a number of reels, often five or six, with a fixed number of rows. When you spin, the reels stop on a combination that the random number generator has already decided. The animations are just a presentation of the result – how quickly or slowly you press makes no difference.

How wins are calculated, on the other hand, differs a lot between games. That is also where the biggest differences in feel and pace lie.

Paylines or pay anywhere

Classic slot machines use paylines: matching symbols must line up in a certain order along a line to give a win. Starburst has ten lines that pay both ways, and Book of Dead has up to ten lines.

Newer games often use systems where symbols pay anywhere on the grid. In Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza, eight or more matching symbols are enough, wherever they are on the six-reel, five-row grid.

Wild, scatter and free spins

A wild replaces other symbols and helps complete wins. A scatter pays regardless of lines and often triggers a bonus round. In Book of Dead, the same symbol – the book – acts as both wild and scatter.

Free spins are a bonus round within the game where you get a number of spins without a new stake being deducted, often with extra features such as expanding symbols or multipliers. Not all games have free spins – Starburst does entirely without them.

Tumbling reels and multipliers

In games with tumbling reels, winning symbols disappear and new ones fall into their place, so one spin can give several wins in a row. Multipliers multiply a win by a certain value. In Gates of Olympus they can land both in the base game and in the bonus round, while in Sweet Bonanza they only appear during free spins.

Best slots – four slot machines worth knowing

These four games represent different ways of building a slot: a classic book slot, two pay-anywhere games and a low-volatility payline slot. All are available at casinos with a Swedish licence, and each has its own review on our site.

Book of Dead (Play’n GO)

Play’n GO’s Egyptian adventure from January 2016 is built on a single idea: three books give ten free spins with a randomly chosen symbol that expands across the whole reel. The standard version has an RTP of 96.21%, volatility is stated as high and the maximum win as 5,000 times the stake.

Note that casinos can choose lower-RTP versions of the game, down to 84.18% according to reference sites. The full rundown is in our Book of Dead review.

Gates of Olympus (Pragmatic Play)

Gates of Olympus from February 2021 combines pay-anywhere wins with multipliers from 2x up to 500x. In the bonus round, which gives 15 free spins, the multipliers are added together into a total that can grow for as long as the round lasts. Pragmatic Play states the RTP as 96.50%, and volatility is described as high.

The game also has Ante Bet, which raises the stake by 25% in exchange for double the chance of triggering free spins. Read more in our Gates of Olympus review.

Sweet Bonanza (Pragmatic Play)

Sweet Bonanza from June 2019 has the same grid and win principle as Gates of Olympus, but the multipliers – sweet bombs of 2x to 100x – only appear in the bonus round. Four lollipops give ten free spins, and the maximum win is stated as more than 21,000 times the stake.

Sources disagree about the volatility, so there we refer you to the game’s information panel. Everything about the rules and bonus round is in our Sweet Bonanza guide.

Starburst (NetEnt)

Starburst from 2012 is the opposite of the other three: low volatility according to NetEnt, no free spins round and a maximum win of 500 times the stake. What it does have is the Starburst Wild, which expands on the three middle reels and gives up to three re-spins.

The game suits you if you want steady, short rounds. More about how it works can be found in our Starburst review.

How to choose among all the online slots

There is no objectively best game, but there are games that suit you better or worse. Five things are worth looking at before you start.

RTP – theoretical return

RTP, or return to player percentage, states how much of all stakes the game in theory pays back over a very large number of spins. The rest is the casino’s margin. With an RTP of 96.21%, the theoretical cost is 37.90 kr per 1,000 kr wagered.

The difference between versions can be large. If the same game is instead run at 84.18%, the theoretical cost is 158.20 kr per 1,000 kr – more than four times as much. That is why the most important habit you can get into is opening the information panel in every game and reading the RTP that applies at your particular casino. The figure, however, says nothing about how an individual session will end.

Volatility – how unevenly the game pays

Volatility describes how winnings are distributed. A low-volatility game, such as Starburst, often gives small wins and rarely large ones. A high-volatility game, such as Book of Dead, can go a long time without bigger hits and then pay a lot in a single bonus round.

Neither type is better in itself. High volatility requires a budget that can withstand long dry spells, while low volatility gives longer playing time but a lower ceiling. Choose based on how you want the game to feel, not on which seems most profitable.

Max win – the ceiling, not the goal

Max win is stated as a multiple of the stake. With 500 times the stake in Starburst, a 2 kr stake gives at most 1,000 kr on one spin, while more than 21,000 times the stake in Sweet Bonanza gives a much higher theoretical ceiling. Maximum wins are reached very rarely and say more about the game’s volatility than about what you can expect.

Features and pace

Tumbling reels, multipliers and bonus rounds make the game more eventful, but also faster. Features such as Ante Bet also change the cost per spin: a 10 kr stake becomes 12.50 kr in Gates of Olympus. Always read what a feature costs before you activate it.

The provider behind the game

The providers behind the four games have different backgrounds. Play’n GO was founded in 2005, has its head office in Växjö and states that its portfolio includes more than 400 games. NetEnt was founded in Sweden in 1996 and has been part of Evolution since December 2020. Pragmatic Play was founded in 2015, has its head office in Gibraltar and, by its own account, is licensed or certified in more than 30 jurisdictions.

Stake and budget

Calculate based on the total amount wagered rather than the stake per spin. If you play at 1 kr per spin and make 500 spins, you have wagered 500 kr. With an RTP of 96.50%, the theoretical return is 482.50 kr, but over so few spins the outcome can end up far from the average in either direction.

A simple way to stay in control is to decide both an amount and a number of spins in advance. When the budget runs out, the session is over – do not raise your stake to win back what you have lost.

Play slots for free in demo mode

Most slot machines can be played for free in demo mode, where you play with play credits instead of real money. Rules, symbols and bonus rounds work as in the real game, so the demo is the best way to get to know a slot before you deposit money.

Use the demo to see how often the bonus round comes and how unevenly the game pays. That gives a better feel for the volatility than a label in a table. Providers often have a demo version on their official game pages – NetEnt, for example, has one for Starburst.

There are two things the demo does not show, though. It says nothing about which RTP version a particular casino uses, and it gives no indication of how things will go when you play with real money – every spin is just as random as the last.

How to get started with online slot machines

  1. Choose a casino with a Swedish licence and check the licence with Spelinspektionen (the Swedish Gambling Authority).
  2. Register. The casino must verify your identity, which in practice is usually done with BankID.
  3. Set a deposit limit per day, week and month – this is mandatory for online gambling in Sweden.
  4. Try the game in demo mode if you do not already know it.
  5. Open the information panel and check the RTP version before you play with real money.
  6. Decide on a budget and a playing time, and stop when either one is used up.

Common mistakes with slots

  • Chasing losses by raising the stake. Every spin is independent of the last, and the game does not “owe” you a win.
  • Missing that the casino runs a version with a lower RTP than the standard version.
  • Activating features such as Ante Bet without accounting for the higher cost per spin.
  • Accepting a bonus without reading the wagering requirement and other terms.
  • Playing without a time limit. Fast rounds make it easy to lose track of how long you have been playing.

Casinos with lots of slot machines

The casinos below are licensed by Spelinspektionen and have a wide range of slots according to their own websites in October 2026. We have chosen them based on the information about range and providers that the casinos themselves publish.

LeoVegas

LeoVegas states that the casino has more than 3,000 games, with providers such as Pragmatic Play, NetEnt, Play’n GO, Hacksaw Gaming, Nolimit City and its own LeoVegas Studios. Book of Dead, Sweet Bonanza and Starburst are in the range according to the casino. The licence is held by Roar Vegas Ltd, licence number 23Si808, valid until 27 November 2028.

Unibet

Unibet states that it has more than 3,000 casino games and highlights providers such as NetEnt, Play’n GO, Pragmatic Play, Quickspin, ELK Studios and Relax Gaming. Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza and Starburst are in the range. The licence is held by Kaprifol Services Limited, licence number 25Si952, valid until 22 October 2030.

Casumo

Casumo has a long line-up of providers, including Play’n GO, Pragmatic Play, NetEnt, Red Tiger, Big Time Gaming, Push Gaming and Thunderkick. Book of Dead and Starburst are in the range according to the casino’s website. Casumo is run by Oddit Limited with licence 23Si773, valid until 21 November 2028.

All three also have mobile apps: Unibet and Casumo offer apps for both iOS and Android, and LeoVegas recommends on its website that you download the casino’s app.

More licensed alternatives, with a rundown of terms and payments, can be found among our reviews of Swedish casinos.

Playing slots at casinos with a Swedish licence

Whether the casino has a Swedish licence is the most important thing you can check. The licence means the casino must verify your identity, follow Swedish rules on responsible gambling and be connected to Spelpaus (the national self-exclusion register). Winnings from games at a casino with a Swedish licence are also tax-free for you as a player.

You can see whether a casino has a valid licence in Spelinspektionen’s licence register, which lists all licence holders and their websites.

Bonuses and free spins

Under Spellagen (the Gambling Act), a casino with a Swedish licence may only offer a bonus the first time you play. That is why welcome offers often include free spins on a particular slot machine. We explain how such offers work in our guide to casino free spins.

Before you accept a bonus, it is important to understand the terms, above all how much has to be wagered before the money can be withdrawn. We show how to calculate that in the guide to wagering requirements and terms.

Deposit limits and credit

When you register, you must set an upper limit for your deposits per day, week and month. If you lower the limit it applies immediately, while an increase takes effect no earlier than 72 hours later. Since 1 May 2026 gambling may not be financed with credit either, and casinos must block credit cards as a payment method.

Responsible gambling with slot machines

Slots are fast, and that pace makes it easy to play longer or for more than you intended. Set a budget and a time limit before you start, and see the money as the cost of the entertainment.

Watch out for the warning signs. If you play to win back losses, borrow money or hide your gambling from others, or if gambling takes time away from work, family and sleep, it is time to take a break. The same applies if you notice that you keep raising your stakes so that the game feels as much fun as before.

  • Use the casino’s self-assessment test to review your gambling habits – all licence holders must offer such a tool.
  • If you need a break, you can exclude yourself immediately for 24 hours at the casino, or for longer.
  • Via Spelpaus.se you exclude yourself from all gambling with Swedish licence holders, from 10 days upwards. An exclusion cannot be undone or ended early.
  • Stödlinjen, the national gambling helpline, offers support and advice by phone on 020-81 91 00 or via chat at stodlinjen.se.
