Betsson posts record casino revenue, but profit slides

Betsson delivered its strongest casino quarter ever this week. Revenue for the third quarter of 2026 reached a record €326.5 million, up ten percent on the same period last year. Profit, however, fell sharply, as higher gambling taxes and rising costs ate into the extra revenue.

What’s new

Betsson reported record revenue for the third quarter, up ten percent to €326.5 million. For the first nine months of the year, the company reached total revenue of €922.1 million, up 3.2 percent year on year. At the same time, operating profit (EBIT) fell 31 percent to €46.1 million, with the margin narrowing to 14.1 percent from 22.6 percent. Net income dropped to €28.2 million, down from €50.1 million the previous year.

Growth was driven primarily by the casino product. Casino revenue rose 14 percent to an all-time high, making up 77 percent of total group revenue. Active customers climbed 40 percent to a record 1.9 million, partly helped by the football World Cup earlier in the quarter. CEO Pontus Lindwall highlighted that the revenue record was especially strong given a weaker sportsbook margin, crediting the casino business for driving results.

The flip side was rising costs. Revenue from locally regulated markets grew 35 percent and now accounts for 78 percent of the total, up from 64 percent, which pushed gaming taxes up by around €28 million to a record level. Gambling duties rose from €41.4 million to €69.4 million as the share of revenue from regulated markets grew from 63.8 to 77.7 percent.

What it means for you as a player

If you play at Betsson in Sweden, the results are broadly a sign of stability. The company is clearly continuing to invest in its casino product, meaning slots and live casino, rather than sports betting right now. That typically translates into more new games and continued development of the app and site, since this is the fastest-growing part of the business.

At the same time, the figures show what higher gambling taxes cost operators in regulated markets like Sweden. This does not affect you directly as a player, but it forms part of the backdrop when casinos weigh up terms and margins. Remember that bonuses at Swedish-licensed casinos may only be offered on a player’s first gaming occasion, and that Spelpaus.se and Stödlinjen.se are always available if gambling starts to feel like a problem.

The bigger picture

Betsson is part of a wider trend among listed gambling operators, where growth in regulated markets simultaneously drives up tax costs. Latin America was the quarter’s biggest growth engine, with revenue up 52 percent, while the European home market contributed steadier but lower margins. The acquisition of Rhino Entertainment Group, consolidated into the accounts from August, also contributed to the revenue increase.

For the Swedish market, where Betsson is one of the biggest players holding a Swedish licence, the report points towards continued focus on the casino product rather than major price cuts or new bonus offers. The next quarterly report should give a clearer picture of whether that strategy holds as the tax burden keeps rising.
