What are free spins?

A free spin is a spin on a slot where the casino pays the stake. As a rule you choose neither the game nor the stake level yourself – both are set in advance. What you win goes either directly to your regular balance or as bonus money that first has to be wagered.

On Swedish sites you will also see the words freespins, bonussnurr (bonus spins) and gratissnurr (literally “free spins”). The last one is a little misleading. At the casinos we have been able to check, the spins are tied to a first deposit and are part of the welcome offer, with their own rules on how the winnings may be used.

Three things that determine the value

• Value per spin. A 2 kr spin gives twice the win of the same outcome at 1 kr.
• The game. The spins almost always apply to a single title, and the slot’s volatility governs how unevenly the winnings are spread across the rounds.
• The conditions on the winnings. Anything from no requirements at all to a wagering requirement that has to be met within a certain time.

So always work out the total value: number of spins times the value per spin. A hundred spins at 1 kr each equal 100 kr in stakes – exactly the same as fifty spins at 2 kr each.

The game behind the spins matters

The same number of spins can give very different results depending on the slot. On a high-volatility game the wins come less often but can be larger when they do come, while a low-volatility game gives more frequent, smaller wins. Book of Dead from Play’n GO, which Mr Green uses for its spins, is described in game databases as a high-volatility slot. There it is completely normal for a hundred spins to give only a few hits – or no big one at all.

That does not mean one game is better than another, only that the spread is different. If the spins come with requirements on the winnings, a steadier slot makes it easier to predict how long your balance will last during the wagering.

Free spins with no deposit?

Many people look for no-deposit free spins or “free spins today”, meaning spins handed out without paying anything in. Among the Swedish offers we have been able to check, all require a first deposit. However the spins are handed out, they count towards the same restriction, which we cover in the next section.

How to activate free spins

1. Create an account and verify your identity. With Swedish operators this is in practice almost always done with BankID.
2. Set your deposit limit per day, week and month – this is mandatory before you can play.
3. Choose your offer. At Mr Green each package is linked to a promo code, for example SWEET25 or BOOK50.
4. Make your first deposit of at least the amount stated in the terms.
5. Open the game the spins apply to. The stake per spin is already set.

Afterwards, check that the spins show up in your account. If they are missing, it is better to contact customer service before you start playing with your own money.

Swedish rules for free spins and other bonuses

Under Chapter 14, Section 9 of Spellagen (the Gambling Act), a licence holder may offer or give a bonus only the first time you play any of the licence holder’s games. The law defines a bonus as a “discount or similar financial incentive directly linked to the game” (Chapter 2, Section 3). Free spins where the casino pays the stake fit that description, so the spins are part of the single bonus you can get from an operator.

That is why you see no weekly spins, recurring promotions or VIP spins at Swedish licence holders. In 2020 the Administrative Court in Linköping ruled (case 5341-19) that a bonus split across several deposits counts as several bonuses, and that publishing an offer on the website is enough for it to count as offering a bonus. Several brands under the same licence

The rule is tied to the licence holder, not the brand. The wording “any of the licence holder’s games” suggests that you should not get a new welcome bonus on one site if you have already played on another site run under the same licence. That is an interpretation of the legal text: we have not found any explicit guidance from Spelinspektionen (the Swedish Gambling Authority) or any court ruling on that specific question. In April 2026, however, the authority issued a remark to Polar Limited for giving bonuses to customers more than once.

For the casinos in our comparison, according to their own information, LeoVegas’s Swedish terms only mention leovegas.com, while Expekt and BetMGM in the same group have their own licences. Unibet and Maria Casino also have different licence holders. If you want to double-check which company is behind a site, you will find the licence holder in the footer.

Mr Green’s alternative spin packages

According to Mr Green’s promotion page in October 2026, new players can instead of the main offer choose 50 free spins on Book of Dead at 5 kr each (minimum deposit 500 kr, to be wagered 1x) or 25 free spins on Sweet Bonanza at 4 kr each (minimum deposit 100 kr). How to assess the terms for free spins

The terms decide whether the spins become something you can actually withdraw or just a brief moment at a slot. Read these parts in particular before you deposit.

Requirements on the winnings

The most important thing is what happens to what you win. At Mr Green the winnings from the spins are paid out without requirements, while Casumo requires them to be wagered 10 times. At Unibet a 1x wagering requirement applies according to the casino’s bonus page. Validity period

The spins and any requirements have a time limit. At LeoVegas you have 60 days to use the spins according to the terms, and Mr Green, Casumo and ComeOn state 60 days for their offers. Check what happens to spins and bonus winnings that are not used in time, and plan so that you have enough time.

Maximum stake while the requirement applies

The spins themselves have a fixed stake, but when you then carry on playing with bonus winnings there is often a ceiling per round. Casumo states 50 kr and Unibet 25 kr per game or spin. Read what the terms say about what happens if you bet over the limit, and stay below the ceiling.

Requirements on the deposit

Even when the spin winnings are free, there may be a requirement linked to your deposit. At Mr Green the deposit in the main offer has to be wagered 25 times for the match bonus, and at LeoVegas the deposit has to be wagered 10 times within 60 days before the bonus is paid out. So the spins often come in a package with conditions that govern the rest of your play.

Which games count

Game contribution shows how much of a stake counts towards the requirement. LeoVegas, for example, states that slots usually count 100%, Blood Suckers and Dead or Alive 70%, table games and video poker 10% and live games not at all. Some slots are excluded entirely. If you need to wager winnings from the spins, it pays to choose games that count in full.

Worked examples: what is a free spins package worth?

The examples below use made-up win amounts. The outcome of a round of spins is random, and the theoretical return to player (RTP) says something about the average over a very large number of spins – not about your particular session.

Example 1: winnings with no requirements

You get 100 spins at 1 kr each. Suppose they give 85 kr in winnings in total. Because the winnings do not need to be wagered, 85 kr goes straight to your balance and can be withdrawn. We describe this type of set-up in more detail on the page about bonuses without wagering requirements.

Example 2: winnings must be wagered 10x

You get 40 spins at 1 kr each and win, say, 60 kr. With a 10x requirement you need to play for 60 × 10 = 600 kr before the money can be withdrawn. If you play a slot that counts 100%, 600 kr in stakes is enough. If you chose a table game that counts 10% instead, 6,000 kr in stakes would be needed to reach the same 600 kr.

Example 3: higher value per spin, larger deposit

50 spins at 5 kr each equal 250 kr in stakes, which is more than both 100 spins at 2 kr (200 kr) and 100 spins at 1 kr (100 kr). But if the offer requires a 500 kr deposit that has to be wagered 1x, you first need to play for 500 kr. So the question is not just which package is biggest, but whether the deposit fits your budget.

Common mistakes with free spins

• Comparing the number instead of the total value. A hundred spins at 1 kr are worth less than fifty at 5 kr.
• Missing the deadline. Spins that are not activated or used in time are gone.
• Using up the bonus on the wrong product. At several operators you choose between a casino, live or sports bonus, and you only get one.
• Missing the maximum stake. The ceiling per round applies as long as the requirement has not been met, even if the game allows higher stakes.
• Raising your deposit to get a bigger package. Decide the amount before you read the promotion, not after.
• Assuming a new site gives new spins. If it is run by the same licence holder, your bonus opportunity may already be used.

Responsible gambling with free spins

Free spins make it easy to get started, and that is exactly why it is wise to set the boundaries first. When gambling online in Sweden you must set a limit on your deposits per day, week and month. A reduction applies immediately, while an increase takes effect no earlier than 72 hours later.

All operators with a Swedish licence must also offer a self-assessment test where you can review your gambling habits. It takes a few minutes and is a good way to take stock before you accept a bonus.
